Cardinals Fans Anticipate Promotion for No. 1 Prospect JJ Wetherholt After Triple-A Start

In a highly anticipated game on Sunday, the Triple-A Memphis team saw No. 1 prospect JJ Wetherholt take the field at third base. As the Cardinals’ top prospect, fans have been eagerly awaiting his promotion to the major leagues.

Wetherholt’s performance on Sunday only added to the excitement, as he showed off his impressive skills and potential. With his strong showing, many are wondering when the Cardinals will make the move to bring him up to the big leagues.

The 22-year-old third baseman has been making waves in the minor leagues, consistently ranking as one of the top prospects in the Cardinals’ organization. His impressive batting average and defensive abilities have caught the attention of fans and coaches alike.

But it’s not just his on-field talent that has people talking. Wetherholt’s work ethic and dedication to the game have also been praised, making him a well-rounded and promising player.

As the Cardinals continue to struggle in the third base position, many are calling for Wetherholt’s promotion as a solution. And with his recent performance in Triple-A, it seems like the perfect time for the Cardinals to make the move.

So, when will we see JJ Wetherholt in a Cardinals uniform? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: fans are eagerly awaiting his arrival and the potential impact he could have on the team.

Is JJ Wetherholt the Next Third Baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals?

After Nolan Arenado, the Cardinals’ gold glove third baseman, was placed on the 10-day IL with no return date in sight, the team has turned to their No. 1 prospect, JJ Wetherholt, for a potential solution.

Wetherholt, who was the Cardinals’ top pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, made his first professional start at third base for the Memphis Redbirds on Sunday. In the game, he went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs, while also playing error-free defense at the hot corner.

This season, Wetherholt has primarily played shortstop and second base for Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis. However, with a log jam in the middle infield, the Cardinals may be considering a position change for the versatile prospect.

“I really don’t care. I’ll play anywhere,” Wetherholt told Athlon Sports in June when asked about potentially moving positions. With other top prospects like Masyn Winn and Brendan Donovan also vying for playing time in the middle infield, Wetherholt’s willingness to play wherever the team needs him is a valuable asset.

Before his injury, Arenado was having another impressive season at third base, leading all MLB third basemen with a .988 fielding percentage and on a 68-game errorless streak. However, his struggles at the plate have been a concern, with a batting average well below his career average.

Meanwhile, Wetherholt has been on fire since his promotion to Triple-A in early July. In just 16 games, he’s hitting .344 with six home runs, 12 RBIs, and an impressive OPS of 1.179. He’s also shown great plate discipline, walking more times than he’s struck out.

With Wetherholt’s hot bat and the Cardinals’ postseason hopes dwindling, a September call-up for the young prospect seems likely. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as the 2025 season winds down.
