The City of St. Louis Allocates $3 Million for Tornado Relief and Recovery Fund

The devastating tornado that hit St. Louis on May 16th left many residents struggling to recover and rebuild. In response, the City of St. Louis has taken action by obtaining approval from the St. Louis City Board of Aldermen and the St. Louis City Board of Estimate and Apportionment under Board Bill 31. This approval allows for the deployment of $3 million from the Rams Settlement Funds to provide specific awards or amounts for the Tornado Relief and Recovery Fund.

Inviting Eligible Organizations to Apply for Funding

The City, in partnership with fiscal agent United Way of Greater St. Louis, is inviting eligible organizations to apply for funding to assist those impacted by the tornado. The funding will specifically target individuals and families facing challenges such as food insecurity, legal issues, and mental health concerns.

“Crucial Funding” for Community Stability

Julian Nicks, Chief Recovery and Neighborhood Transformation Officer, emphasizes the importance of this funding in helping residents navigate the challenges brought on by the disaster. He states, “Disasters often cause profound disruption to community stability. This funding is crucial to helping our residents navigate challenges, prevent displacement, and ensure recovery and resilience.”

Additional Funding for Disaster Case Management

In addition to the $3 million allocated for the Tornado Relief and Recovery Fund, the City of St. Louis will also provide almost $1.9 million from the Rams Settlement Funds for Disaster Case Management (DCM). This funding will go towards certified case managers who will assist disaster survivors in navigating available resources.

Trusted Organizations to Provide DCM Services

The City of St. Louis has entrusted Catholic Charities, The Salvation Army, LifeWise STL, and Housing Options Provided for the Elderly, Inc. (HOPE) to provide DCM services. These organizations have been selected for their expertise and commitment to helping those in need.
