The Boston Red Sox Bolster Pitching Staff with Acquisition of Steven Matz from St. Louis Cardinals

The Boston Red Sox made a major move on Wednesday night, adding left-handed pitcher Steven Matz to their roster from the St. Louis Cardinals. In exchange for Matz, the Cardinals received minor league infielder Blaze Jordan.

Matz, a 34-year-old veteran, brings a wealth of experience to the Red Sox, having played both as a starter and a reliever throughout his career. In 2025, he made 30 of his 32 appearances out of the bullpen and recorded a 5-2 record with a 3.44 ERA across 55 innings.

The left-hander was originally drafted by the New York Mets in the second round of the 2009 draft and spent the first six seasons of his major league career with the team. After a season with the Toronto Blue Jays, Matz joined the Cardinals in 2022 and has been with the team for the past four seasons.
