The St. Louis Cardinals: A Playoff Spot and Potential Roster Boost

The St. Louis Cardinals are in the midst of a fierce competition for a coveted playoff spot. With the July 31 trade deadline looming, the team could be making an exciting move to strengthen their roster. However, the Cardinals have been struggling with their rotation this season, which has been their Achilles’ Heel. According to statistics, they rank 23rd with a 4.30 ERA, third in hits allowed (502), 17th in WHIP (1.26), and 21st in batting average against (.255).

Despite these challenges, the Cardinals remain relevant in the race for a National League postseason ticket. And there is a possibility that a former homegrown Cardinals pitcher could be traded back to the team that drafted him in the coming weeks.

In a recent collaboration by The Athletic’s Tim Britton, Aaron Gleeman, and Chad Jennings, they discussed potential trade deadline chips and where they could be moved. One name that stood out was Zac Gallen, who has had an inconsistent season with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“(Zac) Gallen’s inconsistent season has mirrored Arizona’s (Diamondbacks) on the whole,” they wrote on Wednesday.

As the Cardinals continue to fight for a playoff spot, the addition of a familiar face like Gallen could provide a much-needed boost to their struggling rotation. Only time will tell if this potential trade will come to fruition, but it is certainly an intriguing possibility for the Cardinals and their fans.
