St. Louis Cardinals Suffer Devastating Loss to Rockies, Fall Further Behind in Playoff Race

The St. Louis Cardinals were dealt a crushing blow on Wednesday as they fell to the Colorado Rockies, the worst team in baseball. This loss marks their second series defeat to the Rockies this season and puts them 4.5 games behind the final wildcard spot in the National League.

The Cardinals had a 5-4 lead heading into the ninth inning, but relief pitcher JoJo Romero struggled and ultimately gave up a two-run home run to Hunter Goodman, giving the Rockies a 6-5 lead. Romero took the loss, dropping his record to 4-4 for the season. On the other side, Jimmy Herget earned his first win of the season for Colorado.

St. Louis was unable to mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, with three consecutive batters flying out to end the game. The Rockies, who came into the series on a seven-game losing streak, were able to turn things around and secure just their 32nd win of the season in 120 games.

The Cardinals’ offense struggled throughout the series, scoring only eight runs in three games and getting shut out on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Rockies allowed a whopping 79 runs in their previous seven games, averaging over 11 runs per game.

Colorado will now head home to face the Arizona Diamondbacks, while St. Louis will have a day off before hosting the New York Yankees for a three-game series over the weekend.
