St. Louis Cardinals Legend Ozzie Smith Joins Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary for Fundraiser in Peoria

First-ballot Hall of Famer to Speak at “Hope as an Army” Event

PEORIA – The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary has added a new member to their team – none other than St. Louis Cardinals great Ozzie Smith.

Known as “The Wizard” during his illustrious 19-year career, Smith was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002 and is widely considered one of the greatest defensive shortstops in the history of the game.

Now, he is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the Salvation Army’s 2025 “Hope as an Army” fundraiser this fall in Peoria.

Event Details

The fundraiser will take place on September 25 at Venue Chisca, located at 1009 SW Washington St. in Downtown Peoria. The evening will kick off at 5 p.m. with a silent auction, followed by dinner from Grace Catering at 6:15 p.m. and Smith’s keynote speech at 7 p.m.

Tickets are available for $125 per person or $1,250 for tables of 10. All proceeds will go towards assisting families in need in the Peoria and Tazewell County areas, providing them with food and shelter.

During his time with the St. Louis Cardinals, Smith was a 15-time MLB All-Star, won the Gold Glove at shortstop for 13 consecutive seasons, and had 2,460 career hits and 580 stolen bases. He was also a key member of the Cardinals’ 1982 World Series championship team.

Smith’s iconic game-winning home run in Game 5 of the 1985 NLCS prompted legendary broadcaster Jack Buck’s famous call, “Go crazy, folks.” He was also known for his signature back flip as he ran out to his position on the field.
