PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (July 20, 2025) – In a close and intense game, the Palm Beach Cardinals narrowly defeated the St. Lucie Mets 3-2 in the final match of their series on Sunday afternoon at Clover Park. The Cardinals claimed victory in two out of the three games played in the series.
The Mets took an early lead in the second inning with a two-run homer by Vincent Perozo off Cardinals’ starting pitcher Nelfy Ynfante. However, Mets’ starter Jace Hampson encountered some trouble in the fourth inning, allowing a wild pitch that allowed Deniel Ortiz to score from third base, bringing the score to 2-1. With two outs in the inning, Sammy Hernandez hit a two-run single, giving the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.
Despite the early setback, Ynfante bounced back and pitched a solid 5.0 innings, only allowing the two runs from Perozo’s homer. He gave up two hits, walked two, and struck out three. Cardinals’ reliever Yordy Herrera also had a strong performance, pitching 2.0 hitless innings behind Ynfante.
The Mets had a chance to tie the game in the eighth inning when they loaded the bases with two outs, but Cardinals’ reliever Alan Reyes managed to get Perozo to fly out, preserving the 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Charles Harrison retired the Mets in just four pitches, securing the win for the Cardinals and earning the save.
Hampson, making his debut with the Mets, took the loss after giving up three runs on two hits in 4.0 innings. He also walked three and struck out two. Mets’ long reliever Franklin Gomez stepped up and pitched 4.0 scoreless innings after Hampson’s departure. Juan Arnaud also had a strong performance, inheriting two base runners with no outs in the top of the ninth and managing to get a double play and a fly out to keep the Mets within one run.
The Mets’ offense was limited to just four hits from Perozo, Trace Willhoite, Trey Snyder, and Yohairo Cuevas. The team will have a day off on Monday before returning to the field on Tuesday for a three-day, four-game series against the Daytona Tortugas at Clover Park. The first pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 6:10 p.m., with Wednesday’s game starting at 6:05 p.m. The teams will then play a doubleheader on Thursday, starting at 11:10 a.m.
