The Key Fix That Led to Miles Mikolas’ Gem After One of His Worst Starts

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas has been a rollercoaster of a starter in the 2025 MLB season. However, after a rough outing against the Chicago Cubs, he bounced back in a big way against the Washington Nationals on Thursday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, leading his team to an 8-1 victory.

Against the Cubs, Mikolas struggled, giving up eight earned runs on 10 hits, including six home runs. While he did strike out four batters and didn’t issue any walks, it was clear that his performance was far from ideal.

But with the help of pitching coach Dusty Blake, Mikolas made some adjustments and was able to turn things around in his next start.

“(Mikolas) is a pro,” said Cardinals manager Mike Marmol (via Katie Woo of The Athletic). “You can shoot him straight, you can tell him exactly what you need to say, and he handles it really well. The majority of the conversations this week were with pitching coach Dusty Blake, just cleaning up some tipping and making sure that we were going into this outing feeling good about that.”

The result was a stellar showing against the Nationals, as the 36-year-old pitcher threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and one walk while striking out six batters.

While Mikolas’ overall stats for the season may still be mediocre, his performance against the Nationals was a great way to end the first half of the season for the Cardinals.
