Top Cardinals Prospect Hits First MLB Home Run in Front of Family
Jimmy Crooks made his first Major League start on Sunday at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, and it was a memorable one. The St. Louis Cardinals’ No. 6 prospect blasted a home run in the seventh inning, marking his first MLB hit.
Crooks, a rookie catcher, was called up from Triple-A Memphis on Friday and caught the final two innings of that night’s game. But it wasn’t until Sunday that he got his first at-bat in the starting lineup.
Facing reliever Sam Moll, Crooks quickly fell behind in the count 0-2. But he battled back and took three straight balls to bring the count full. On the next pitch, Moll made a mistake and threw his signature sweeper in the middle of the zone. Crooks didn’t miss, sending the ball 384 ft. to right field for a home run.
“It was a pretty good first two at-bats, but they didn’t go my way,” Crooks said, according to MLB.com’s John Denton. “So I just stuck with it. We knew a lefty was coming in, and we loved his sweeper, so we kind of stuck with the game plan. And [he] threw it in the go zone, and I swung.”
Crooks’ manager, Oli Marmol, was impressed with his performance in his first MLB start. “I thought he handled it really well,” Marmol said. “And then good to see him hit the homer, stay on that pitch. Overall, even when he came into the game Friday–that was a big part of the game–he came in late and he kept his cool. He was under control and handled it perfectly.”
Second baseman Cesar Prieto also made his first MLB start on Sunday, recording his first Major League hit on an infield single in the ninth inning. However, Prieto also made an error in the second inning that led to three runs for the opposing team.
The Cardinals will continue to evaluate their young talent on Tuesday against the Athletics at Busch Stadium. Unfortunately, they dropped the series opener earlier today.
