The beloved former Cardinals catcher will be joining manager Oliver Marmol’s staff for all three games as the team takes on the San Francisco Giants.
This is not the first time Molina has returned to the Cardinals as a guest coach. Just five weeks ago, he joined the team for home games and brought his wealth of knowledge and experience to the dugout. Yadier Molina Returns to St. Louis as Visiting Coach for Cardinals
In a surprise move, Yadier Molina will be joining the St. Louis Cardinals as a visiting coach this weekend at Busch Stadium. This comes a year before his own induction into the Cardinals Hall of Fame and just in time to spend time with the team’s latest catching prospect.
Molina, who will be sporting his iconic No. 4 jersey, will be with the team for all three games as they host the San Francisco Giants. This is the second time in five weeks that Molina has joined manager Oliver Marmol’s staff as a guest coach for home games.
The manager first approached Molina about joining his staff back in September 2023 and reached out to him again a few weeks ago to be a resource for young players and join the coaching staff in the dugout during games.
Molina’s return to St. Louis also coincides with the team’s Hall of Fame inductions, where they will honor former general manager Walt Jocketty and present a red jacket to former shortstop Edgar Renteria. Both were part of the 2004 team that made Molina’s debut and went on to win the National League pennant.
Joining them in the Hall of Fame will be longtime broadcaster and former closer Al Hrabosky.
Molina’s return also comes as the team plans to activate catcher Yohel Pozo from the seven-day concussion list and carry three catchers for the remainder of the season. This will give prospect Jimmy Crooks a chance to gain experience and potentially earn a spot on the major-league club in 2026.
Molina, who has expressed interest in managing a major-league club, has been preparing for that role by managing winter ball teams in Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. He has also been named manager for Team Puerto Rico in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, where he will face off against former teammate Albert Pujols, who will be managing the Dominican national team.
During his previous visit in August, Molina discussed his desire to become a coach with a major-league club and his timeline for eventually managing a team. With his return to St. Louis, it seems that Molina’s dream of becoming a manager is one step closer to reality.
