Cardinals Still Waiting for First Series Win Since July 10

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ) – The St. Louis Cardinals are in desperate need of a series win after dropping back-to-back games to the San Diego Padres. The Cardinals (54-53) currently hold the third-worst record in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the month of July (7-14), largely due to lackluster pitching performances.

On Sunday, the Cardinals suffered a 9-2 loss to the Padres (57-49) at Busch Stadium, resulting in a four-game series split. St. Louis has allowed four runs or more in 15 of 21 games this month, with a 5.35 ERA in July – the fifth-worst in the league.

Padres Dominate Early, Cardinals Struggle to Keep Up

Manager Oliver Marmol’s team faced a 7-0 deficit after the first four innings of the game. The Padres’ Manny Machado was the main culprit, hitting a pair of run-scoring doubles during that span. He finished the game 4-for-5 with three RBI’s.

The Cardinals finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Alec Burleson hit a two-run shot to center field, his 13th home run of the year. However, the Padres quickly responded with a solo home run from Xander Bogaerts in the seventh inning and an infield RBI single from Jackson Merrill in the eighth, regaining a seven-run lead.

Struggles on the Mound and at the Plate for the Cardinals

Michael McGreevy had a tough outing on the mound, surrendering seven runs on nine hits over 4.2 innings. The Cardinals as a whole gave up 16 hits to the Padres. Burleson was the standout performer for the Redbirds, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Ivan Herrera, Masyn Winn, Jordan Walker, and Victor Scott II also contributed with one hit each.

Next Up: Cardinals Face Miami in Three-Game Series

The Cardinals will look to turn things around with a three-game series against the Miami Marlins at Busch Stadium, starting on July 28 at 6:45 p.m. It’s a crucial series for the Cardinals as they try to break their series win drought and improve their record for the month of July.
