Cardinals No. 1 Prospect JJ Wetherholt Surges up Top 100 Rankings

In a recent update to MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospects list, four St. Louis Cardinals prospects made the cut, with middle-infielder JJ Wetherholt leading the way. The 22-year-old has been on a hot streak since being named the organization’s Minor League Player of the Month for July, and has now moved up to No. 6 on the list.

Wetherholt, who was the Cardinals’ seventh overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, has been tearing it up with a .306/.395/.708 slash line, 7 home runs, and 16 RBIs in just 19 games between Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis last month. He also had the honor of being the Cardinals’ lone representative at the MLB All-Star Futures Game.

Since his promotion to Memphis on July 7, Wetherholt has continued to impress with a .295/.394/.615 line, 6 home runs, and 13 RBIs in 21 games. He has also been playing at third base in addition to his natural position at shortstop, which could be a sign of an impending call-up to the big leagues. With Cardinals’ gold glove third baseman Nolan Arenado currently on the injured list, Wetherholt could be a valuable addition to the team.

But Wetherholt wasn’t the only Cardinals prospect making waves on the updated Top 100 list. For the first time since the 2025 MLB Draft, the rankings included this year’s draft picks, and the Cardinals’ top pick (No. 5 overall) Liam Doyle made an impressive debut at No. 34. The left-hander out of Tennessee had a standout season with the Volunteers, leading all Division I pitchers with 164 strikeouts and signing with the Cardinals for a below-slot deal of $7.25 million on July 17.

Two Cardinals catching prospects also made the Top 100 list – Leonardo Bernal at No. 74 and 18-year-old Rainiel Rodriguez at No. 99. However, despite earning the International League’s Pitcher of the Week honors, Quinn Matthews fell out of the Top 100 and is now the Cardinals’ No. 5 prospect.

Additionally, four of the five prospects acquired by the Cardinals at the MLB Trade Deadline were also ranked among the organization’s Top 30 prospects. Shortstop Jesus Baez came in at No. 7, right-hander Nate Dohm at No. 17, corner infielder Blaze Jordan at No. 18, and left-hander Mason Molina at No. 27.

It’s an exciting time for the Cardinals’ farm system, with several top prospects making their way up the rankings and new additions adding even more talent to the mix. Keep an eye on these rising stars as they continue to make their mark in the world of baseball.
