Teams Vying for Cardinals Closer Ryan Helsley as Trade Deadline Looms

As the trade deadline rapidly approaches, multiple teams have set their sights on acquiring Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley. The hard-throwing right-hander has caught the attention of several contenders in need of bullpen help.

Helsley, known for his electric fastball and devastating slider, has been a reliable force for the Cardinals this season. With a 2.45 ERA and 10 saves, he has solidified his role as the team’s closer and has become a valuable asset for any team looking to bolster their bullpen.

According to sources, the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, and Chicago White Sox are among the teams expressing interest in Helsley. All three teams are currently in the playoff hunt and see Helsley as a key piece to their postseason aspirations.

The Cardinals, however, are not actively shopping Helsley and would need to be blown away by an offer in order to part ways with their closer. With a strong farm system and a desire to compete this season, the Cardinals are in a good position to hold onto Helsley unless a team makes an irresistible offer.

But with the trade deadline just days away, the pressure is on for teams to make a move and solidify their rosters for the stretch run. As the interest in Helsley continues to grow, it remains to be seen if the Cardinals will be willing to part with their valuable closer or if he will remain a key piece of their bullpen for

Cardinals’ Ryan Helsley Garnering Attention from Contenders, Potential Trade Target

The Cardinals’ second half of the season started off on a rough note as they were swept by the Diamondbacks this past weekend. With four losses in their last 15 games, St. Louis has fallen 8.5 games behind in the NL Central and 3.5 games out of the final wild card spot.

As the trade deadline approaches in just 10 days, it seems likely that the Cardinals will be sellers. Among their potential trade pieces are relief pitchers Phil Maton and Steven Matz, both of whom are set to become free agents at the end of the season. However, the most sought after player may be 31-year-old closer Ryan Helsley.

Helsley, a two-time All-Star and last season’s MLB leader in saves, has had a down year with a 3.18 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, the Cardinals are undecided on whether to trade him or not. However, with five-plus contenders showing interest, they may have no choice but to move on from their closer.

According to ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan, there is a 60% chance that Helsley will be traded at the deadline. The Dodgers, Phillies, Yankees, Tigers, and Mets are among the potential suitors for the veteran closer.

Despite the potential for a trade, Helsley has expressed his desire to stay in St. Louis and continue the Cardinals’ tradition. However, he understands that it is ultimately not his decision and is focused on helping the team win games.

The Cardinals will look to bounce back from their recent struggles as they begin a series with the Colorado Rockies tonight. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 21, 2025.
