Cards’ Alec Burleson Returns to Starting Lineup for Series Finale Against Tampa Bay
St. Louis Cardinals utility player Alec Burleson is set to make his return to the starting lineup for Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field. This comes after being sidelined due to a right wrist injury sustained during a game on August 21.
The Cardinals suffered a loss in Friday’s game without Burleson, but they have a chance to redeem themselves and secure a series win today at 12:10 p.m. ET.
In his fourth season in the Major Leagues, Burleson has been a valuable asset to the team with a .285 batting average, .337 on-base percentage, and .449 slugging percentage. He has also hit 15 home runs and driven in 59 runs in 117 games. Only first baseman Willson Contreras has more home runs (19) and RBI (70) on the Cardinals.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals’ playoff hopes are fading as they currently sit at 64-66 and are 5.5 games behind the last NL Wild Card spot. According to Baseball Reference, they only have a 4.1% chance of making it to the postseason.
The team started off strong, reaching a season-high nine games over .500 on June 29, but have struggled since then with a record of 17-28 in their last 45 games. One of the main reasons for their struggles is their pitching staff, which ranks 24th in the MLB with a 4.80 ERA after the All-Star Break.
Burleson, a second-round pick by the Cardinals in the 2020 Draft, made his Major League debut in 2022 and has continued to improve his batting average each year. In addition to his offensive skills, he is also a versatile defender who can play in the outfield or at first base.
As the Cardinals make a push for the postseason, they will need Burleson and his teammates to step up and perform at their best.
