Friday Notes…Road Warriors, Part 1: Cubs Dominate First Game of Road Series

The Chicago Cubs have been on the road for the majority of their games this season, and they have had mixed success. However, one trend that stands out is their dominance in the first game of a road series. In fact, they have won the first game in six out of their first 10 series on the road this season. This pattern has been consistent, with the Cubs alternating two wins and two losses five times. Their most recent wins came against the Cincinnati Reds on May 23 and the Washington Nationals on June 3.

Since then, however, the Cubs have struggled in the opening game of their road series. They have lost the first game in eight consecutive series, including matchups against the Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros, Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, and Milwaukee Brewers. Out of those eight series, the Cubs have only managed to win two, against the Yankees and White Sox. They did manage to split a four-game series against the Cardinals. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)

Road Warriors, Part 2: Cubs Hit Home Run Record on the Road

The Cubs have been hitting the ball out of the park on the road this season, with a total of 91 home runs in their first 56 road games. This is the second-highest number of home runs in the first 56 road games of any season, only behind their record of 96 in 2019. Their third-highest record is 80 home runs, which was set in 2017. In the last four seasons, the Cubs have hit 62, 60, 66, and 59 home runs on the road. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)

Breaking the Rookie Record: Cade Horton Continues Scoreless Streak

Cubs rookie Cade Horton has been on a roll, with a scoreless streak of 23.1 innings. This has broken Kerry Wood’s Cubs rookie record of 21 innings, which was set in 1998. The franchise record for scoreless innings is 44.1, set by Ed Reulbach in 1908. In the Live Ball Era (post-1920), the franchise record is 39.2 innings, set by Bill Lee in 1938. The Rookie Continues to Hit: Matt Shaw’s Impressive Stats

Matt Shaw, a rookie for the Cubs, has been on fire since the All-Star break. In the past 18 games, he has a batting average of .315, with four doubles, five home runs, 11 RBI, three stolen bases, and nine runs scored. This impressive performance has been a key factor in the Cubs’ success on the road.

Today’s Matchup: Cubs vs. Cardinals

The Cubs will face off against the St. Louis Cardinals tonight, with Matthew Boyd taking the mound for the Cubs. Boyd has been in top form, with a 1.40 ERA and 0.822 WHIP in his last seven starts. He will be facing off against Michael McGreevy, who has been up and down between Triple-A and the Cardinals this season. In his last three starts, McGreevy has a 6.11 ERA and 1.472 WHIP. The Cubs will be looking to continue their success against McGreevy and secure another win on the road.

Today’s game will be broadcasted on Marquee Sports Network and MLB Network. You can also follow along on MLB.com’s live streaming page. For more information on the Cardinals, visit our SB Nation site Viva el Birdos. Let’s go Cubs!
