East Carolina University Pitcher Drafted by St. Louis Cardinals in 2025 MLB Draft

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – It was a dream come true for East Carolina University junior pitcher Ethan Young on Monday, July 13, 2025. Young was selected in the fifth round, No. 150 overall, in the 2025 Major League Baseball Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.

This marks the 30th draft pick for the Pirates under the leadership of head coach Cliff Godwin. Young joins the ranks of other talented ECU players who have been drafted into the MLB.

Young, a standout player for the Pirates, has proven himself to be a valuable asset on the field. His hard work and dedication have paid off, earning him a spot on the St. Louis Cardinals’ roster.

Young Joins Impressive List of Former Pirates Drafted by St. Louis

East Carolina University’s junior pitcher, Ethan Young, has been making headlines after being selected in the fifth round of the 2025 Major League Baseball Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.

On Monday, July 13, 2025, Young was chosen as the 150th overall pick, solidifying his spot in the professional league. This marks the 30th time a player under head coach Cliff Godwin has been drafted, showcasing the success of the East Carolina baseball program.

Young is the second player from ECU to be selected in the 2025 MLB Draft and the 133rd player in the program’s history. He joins a prestigious list of former Pirates, including Seth Maness, Evan Kruczynski, Chris Holba, Thomas Francisco, and Tyler Bradt, who have all been drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Originally from Harrisburg, Young had an impressive season with the Pirates, appearing in 23 games and posting a 5-0 record with three saves. He also had a 3.84 ERA over 70-and-a-third innings and recorded 92 strikeouts. His performance placed him among the top five in several categories for the Pirates, including strikeouts, innings pitched, saves, and wins.
