Guardians Pitchers Clase and Ortiz Remain on Paid Leave Amid Gambling Investigation

The Cleveland Guardians have announced that pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz will continue to be absent from the team “until further notice” as an investigation into their gambling activities is ongoing. The decision was made by the league and the players association, who have agreed to extend the players’ paid leave. The statement also stated that there will be no further comments until the investigation is completed.

Gambling Investigation Surrounds Pitchers Clase and Ortiz

Starting pitcher Luis Ortiz was placed on leave on July 3 after two of his pitches in June were flagged by a betting-integrity company for unusual betting activity. The first pitch of the second inning in a game against the Mariners on June 15 and a pitch in the third inning against the Cardinals on June 27 were both outside the strike zone. Clase, a top closer for the Guardians, also received the same treatment on July 28. The Ohio Casino Control Commission is investigating the situation along with MLB.

Guardians Players Latest to be Involved in Betting Scandal

Ortiz and Clase are not the first players to be involved in a betting scandal in the MLB. Last year, Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano was banned for life for betting on his own team’s games. Other players, including A’s pitcher Michael Kelly and Diamondbacks pitcher Andrew Saalfrank, have also received suspensions for betting on other teams.

Guardians Struggle Without Clase and Ortiz

The absence of Clase and Ortiz has been a major blow to the Guardians, who are currently three games back in the American League wild card race. Ortiz, who joined the team in December, has a 4.36 ERA with 96 strikeouts in 16 starts. Clase, a three-time MLB All-Star, has a 3.23 ERA and 24 saves this season. The team will have to find a way to fill the void left by these top pitchers as the investigation continues.
