Reds Catcher Tyler Stephenson Making Progress in Recovery from Thumb Injury

Even though he may be limited by his injured thumb, Tyler Stephenson’s hitting abilities are showing promise as the Cincinnati Reds gear up for September baseball. As the Reds began a crucial nine-game homestand on August 29th, Stephenson continued to make strides in his recovery from a thumb fracture that landed him on the injured list on August 20th. He participated in batting practice and caught balls from a pitching machine, with Reds manager Terry Francona reporting that it went well. The team is considering utilizing Stephenson’s bat before relying on him as a catcher.

Reds Manager Terry Francona: “We’re Trying to Move Him Along”

Francona stated that Stephenson will catch off the machine on August 30th as it is a more reliable option. The team is focused on progressing Stephenson’s recovery and avoiding any setbacks. He has been able to hit without any issues and the team is considering starting his hitting progression before he is ready to catch in a game. Stephenson last played on August 15th against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Stephenson Wearing Custom-Fitted Protective Guard on Injured Thumb

Stephenson is now wearing a custom-fitted protective guard on his injured left thumb, which a hand specialist believes could allow him to return from the injured list in 10 to 14 days. This was reported by The Enquirer on August 23rd. If this timeline holds up, Stephenson could potentially rejoin the Reds during the current homestand, which includes a series against the New York Mets. The Reds are currently chasing the Mets for a National League wild card spot.

Upcoming Series Against Mets Could Shape Rest of September for Reds

The series against the Mets from September 5th-7th could have a significant impact on the rest of the month for the Reds in their pursuit of a wild card spot. However, they still have to face the St. Louis Cardinals on August 30th and 31st, followed by the American League East-leading Toronto Blue Jays from September 1st-3rd before the Mets arrive at Great American Ball Park. Stay tuned for updates on Tyler Stephenson’s recovery and potential return to the Reds lineup.
