In a nail-biting game on Wednesday night, the Pittsburgh Pirates came out on top with a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. The winning run came in the sixth inning, thanks to a clutch two-run single by Tommy Pham.
The Pirates’ highly-touted rookie pitcher, Bubba Chandler, proved his worth by pitching four scoreless innings in relief of starter Carmen Mlodzinski. This was only Chandler’s second major league game, but he showed poise and skill on the mound, earning his first win.
The game was tied at 0-0 until the sixth inning when Isiah Kiner-Falefa doubled off Sonny Gray, followed by a walk and an error that loaded the bases for the Pirates. Gray managed to get one out, but then Pham stepped up and delivered a clutch hit up the middle to bring in two runs.
The Cardinals had taken an early lead in the second inning with a run scored by Pedro Pagés, but they were unable to hold onto it as the Pirates’ pitching shut them down for the rest of the game.
This win marks the second time in the last 12 seasons that the Pirates have won the season series against the Cardinals.
The Pirates will look to continue their success in the series finale on Thursday, with right-handed pitcher Braxton Ashcraft taking the mound against Cardinals’ right-hander Miles Mikolas.
