The Cardinals Fall Short Despite Strong Pitching Performance from Sonny Gray
In a much-needed game for the Cardinals, Sonny Gray delivered a stellar pitching performance on Wednesday night. However, the team’s batters failed to provide enough support, resulting in a disappointing loss to the Pirates at Busch Stadium.
Gray dominated the first five innings, throwing just 50 pitches and allowing only one hit. But in the sixth inning, he ran into trouble and the Pirates were able to capitalize. Despite his efforts, Gray’s performance was not enough to secure a victory for the Cardinals.
The Pirates’ strong defense held the Cardinals to just four hits, all of which were singles. This lack of offensive production proved to be the downfall for the Cardinals, as they were unable to match the Pirates’ scoring.
It was a frustrating night for the Cardinals, who were hoping to turn things around after a string of disappointing performances. But with Gray’s impressive outing, there is still hope for the team to bounce back and come out on top in future games.
Tommy Pham’s Two-Run Single Leads Pirates to 2-1 Victory over Cardinals in Wednesday Night Showdown
ST. LOUIS – In a much-needed game for the Cardinals, Sonny Gray delivered a strong pitching performance on Wednesday night. However, it wasn’t enough to secure a win as the team’s batters struggled once again, resulting in a 2-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates at Busch Stadium.
Gray dominated the first five innings, allowing only one hit on 50 pitches. But in the sixth, he ran into trouble with a leadoff double, a walk, and an error by Willson Contreras. These mistakes allowed the Pirates to score two runs on a bases-loaded single by former Cardinal, Tommy Pham.
Despite Gray’s impressive outing, the Cardinals were held to just four hits, all singles, by the Pirates’ pitching. The team’s struggles at the plate continued from their previous game, where they were also held to only three hits. In total, the Cardinals were 7-for-58 in the two games, resulting in a dismal .121 batting average.
Game Breakdown:
At the Plate: The Cardinals managed to give Gray a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a single from Masyn Winn and a walk to Thomas Saggese. Pedro Pages then drove in Winn with a single. The team’s only other hits came from Ivan Herrera in the third and Pages again in the fifth. However, the Pirates’ pitching retired 14 of the last 16 Cardinals batters, with only a hit batter and a walk providing any baserunners. The team also struck out nine times, bringing their total to 22 strikeouts in the two consecutive losses to the Pirates.
On the Mound: Gray had a solid outing, issuing three walks and striking out seven in seven innings. However, one of the two runs he allowed was unearned due to Contreras’ error. Matt Svanson also pitched two scoreless innings in relief, working around a walk in both the eighth and ninth innings.
Key Stat: The Cardinals have now been held to four or fewer hits in 19 games this season, with four of those games against the Pirates. The team has a 4-15 record in those games, including a 1-3 record against the Pirates.
