Brian Cashman Joins Yankees on Road Trip to St. Louis, Team Secures 4-3 Victory Against Cardinals
In a rare move, Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman accompanied the team to St. Louis and watched as they defeated the Cardinals 4-3 on Friday night. Despite the team’s recent struggles and third-place standing, Cashman stated that his presence was due to scheduling availability rather than urgency.
According to The Athletic, Cashman acknowledged the team’s limited time left in the season but emphasized that there is still a sense of urgency. He also defended the job of manager Aaron Boone.
The Yankees got off to a strong start with an early lead thanks to an Aaron Judge groundout and a two-run homer from Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the first inning. In the third inning, Jasson Domínguez, making his first start since August 10th, brought Chisholm home with a single on a 3-0 pitch.
Pitcher Luis Gil had a solid outing, allowing only one earned run over 5 1/3 innings with the help of three inning-ending double plays. However, the Cardinals were able to score in the sixth inning with back-to-back doubles from Lars Nootbar and Masyn Wynn.
The Yankees bullpen held off the Cardinals, with Mark Leiter Jr. and Camilo Doval each recording an inning-ending double play. However, Luke Weaver and David Bednar allowed the Cardinals to score in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively.
Despite the Cardinals’ late attempts at a comeback, the Yankees held on for the win, securing their third victory in the last four games. With a record of 65-57, the Yankees are now 1.5 games ahead of the Guardians for the American League’s last playoff spot.
