Cardinals Shut Out Padres, Move Up in Wild Card Standings

The St. Louis Cardinals are making a strong push for a spot in the NL Wild Card standings as the trade deadline approaches. Behind a dominant performance from Miles Mikolas and key RBIs from Yohel Pozo and Masyn Winn, the Cardinals were able to inch closer to the top of the standings with a 3-0 win over the San Diego Padres on Friday night at Busch Stadium.

Mikolas Leads the Way

Starter Miles Mikolas was the star of the game for the Cardinals, pitching five-plus scoreless innings and recording his fifth scoreless outing of the season. He worked around seven hits and did not issue a walk, setting the Cardinals up for a strong finish.

Key RBIs from Pozo and Winn

The Cardinals’ offense was led by RBIs from Yohel Pozo and Masyn Winn. Pozo drove in the first run of the game with a groundout in the third inning, while Winn’s double in the fourth inning brought in two more runs to give the Cardinals a comfortable lead.

Strong Bullpen Performance

After Mikolas’ exit, the Cardinals’ bullpen stepped up to secure the win. Steven Matz, Phil Maton, and JoJo Romero each notched holds with scoreless innings of relief, setting up closer Ryan Helsley to secure his 21st save of the season.

The Cardinals’ win puts them just 1 1/2 games behind the Padres for the final wild card spot in the National League. With their core of high-leverage arms and strong offensive performances, the Cardinals are making a strong case for a spot in the playoffs.
