Cardinals’ Willson Contreras Suspended for Four Games After Ejection and Bat-Throwing Incident

On September 5, 2025 at 06:52 PM ET, St. Louis Cardinals’ first baseman Willson Contreras began serving a four-game suspension in the team’s series opener against the San Francisco Giants. This comes after Contreras was initially given a six-game suspension for his outburst on August 25, where he was ejected for arguing with umpire Derek Thomas over balls and strikes. During his ejection, Contreras threw a bat that hit Cardinals hitting coach Brant Brown and also tossed a tub of candy onto the field.

In addition to Contreras’ suspension, the Cardinals have activated backup catcher Yohel Pozo from the seven-day concussion list. Manager Oliver Marmol has announced that Nolan Gorman will start at first base while Contreras is out.

Meanwhile, eight-time All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado has rejoined the team after a stint in Florida. Marmol stated that Arenado could potentially begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield on Tuesday if the weekend goes well. Outfielder Alec Burleson, who has been on the injured list since August 29 with right wrist inflammation, is expected to be activated on Monday without a rehab assignment.

As for All-Star second baseman Brandon Donovan, who has been out with a left groin strain, Marmol mentioned that he has been participating in batting practice but there is no clear timeline for his return.
