The Cardinals’ Winning Streak on Taylor Swift Announcement Days
The St. Louis Cardinals have been on a roll lately, despite trading away three relievers at the trade deadline. And on Monday, August 12th, they continued their winning streak as they began a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies in St. Louis.
But what’s even more impressive is the Cardinals’ unknowingly extended streak that has been linked to none other than Taylor Swift. According to Twitter user @QuinnSTLCards, every time Swift announces her newest album, the Cardinals have won on that day.
The First Instance of Swift Magic
The first time the Cardinals benefited from this “Swift magic” was on October 24th, 2006. It wasn’t for an album announcement, but for the release of Swift’s debut album, “Taylor Swift.” On that same day, the Cardinals beat the Detroit Tigers in game three of the World Series, putting them up 2-1.
A Streak of Coincidences
Since then, there have been several instances where the Cardinals have won on the same day that Swift announced an album. On July 20th, 2010, Swift announced “Speak Now” and the Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-1. This was the first time the two events coincided.
In 2014, Swift announced “1989” and the release of “Shake It Off” on a livestream. That same day, the Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-5, officially beginning an incredible streak between the Cardinals and Taylor Swift.
The Streak Continues
On August 23rd, 2017, the Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 6-2, the same day that Swift announced “Reputation.” This was the third instance of Swift’s album announcement and the Cardinals winning coinciding, and it certainly wouldn’t be the last.
On July 23rd, 2020, Swift announced “Folklore” in the midst of the Coronavirus Pandemic. While the Cardinals didn’t play on that day, they did win the next day against the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4. And on August 28th, 2022, Swift announced “Midnights” during the MTV Video Music Awards, and the Cardinals beat the Atlanta Braves 6-3.
The Impressive Winning Streak
Most recently, on August 9th, 2023, Swift announced “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” and the Cardinals were playing against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Cardinals won that game 6-4, extending their winning streak on announcement days.
In total, the Cardinals have not only remained undefeated on days of significance for Swift, but they have a collective record of 8-0. It’s a wild coincidence, but an incredibly impressive one. And while the Cardinals have lost on days of importance for Swift, they have never lost on a day when she announced her next album. It seems that Taylor Swift is unfazed by the Cardinals’ winning streak, but it’s certainly something worth noting.
