Phil Maton Shines in Ninth MLB Season with Texas Rangers
Attention all Bulldog Baseball fans! As we head into the spring and summer months, BleedTechBlue.com is excited to bring you updates on former Bulldog players who are currently playing in affiliated professional baseball leagues. And the biggest name on our list is none other than Ruston native, Phil Maton.
After signing with the St. Louis Cardinals in the offseason, Maton was traded to the Texas Rangers at the deadline. Now in his ninth MLB season, he continues to dominate on the mound. Let’s take a look at his impressive 2025 stats: 44 appearances, 1-3, 42.1 IP, 2.34 ERA, 11 ER, 30 hits allowed, 16 BB, 51 K.
Cade Gibson Proves Himself in Rookie Season with Marlins
Another standout former Bulldog is Cade Gibson, who was recently optioned back to Triple-A by the Marlins. However, he has had a solid rookie campaign at the major league level. Let’s take a closer look at his 2025 numbers: 27 appearances, 2-5, 34.2 IP, 3.38 ERA, 13 ER, 34 hits allowed, 11 BB, 26 K.
Former Bulldogs Competing in Minor League Baseball
In addition to Maton and Gibson, there are 11 other former Bulldogs currently competing in minor league baseball. Let’s break down where each player is currently assigned and how they’ve performed so far this season:
David Leal (AAA, Oakland Athletics)
Leal has made 35 appearances with a 1-1 record and a 3.60 ERA in 40 innings pitched. He has allowed 16 earned runs, 34 hits, and has struck out 43 batters while walking 22.
Ryan Jennings (AAA, Toronto Blue Jays)
Jennings has made 36 appearances with a 4-2 record and a 3.59 ERA in 47.2 innings pitched. He has allowed 19 earned runs, 42 hits, and has struck out 61 batters while walking 35.
Jarret Whorff (AAA, Minnesota Twins)
Whorff has made 33 appearances with a 5-4 record and a 4.72 ERA in 61 innings pitched. He has allowed 32 earned runs, 57 hits, and has struck out 67 batters while walking 21.
Taylor Young (AA, Los Angeles Dodgers)
Young has played in 104 games with a .223 batting average, .333 on-base percentage, and .285 slugging percentage. He has hit 2 home runs, driven in 29 runs, and has 60 walks and 77 strikeouts. He has also stolen 30 bases in 39 attempts.
Jackson Lancaster (AA, Tampa Bay Rays)
Lancaster has made 23 appearances with a 3-1 record and a 3.35 ERA in 40.1 innings pitched. He has allowed 15 earned runs, 28 hits, and has struck out 39 batters while walking 15.
Landon Tomkins (AA, Pittsburgh Pirates)
Tomkins has made 39 appearances with a 6-3 record and a 2.47 ERA in 47.1 innings pitched. He has allowed 13 earned runs, 30 hits, and has struck out 47 batters while walking 19. Tomkins was recently promoted to AA.
Jorge Corona (A, Chicago White Sox)
Corona has played in 25 games with a .184 batting average, .303 on-base percentage, and .263 slugging percentage. He has hit 1 home run, driven in 6 runs, and has 9 walks and 32 strikeouts. Corona was promoted to Double-A on July 29 but has yet to make his first appearance.
Cole McConnell (A+, Chicago White Sox)
McConnell has played in 71 games with a .240 batting average, .349 on-base percentage, and .328 slugging percentage. He has hit 4 home runs, driven in 23 runs, and has 33 walks and 92 strikeouts. He has also stolen 5 bases in 10 attempts.
Sam Brodersen (A, St. Louis Cardinals)
Brodersen has made 29 appearances with a 1-3 record and a 6.69 ERA in 36.1 innings pitched. He has allowed 27 earned runs, 35 hits, and has struck out 50 batters while walking 36.
Dalton Davis (A, Seattle Mariners)
Davis has played in 30 games with a .372 batting average, .438 on-base percentage, and .531 slugging percentage. He has hit 1 home run, driven in 15 runs, and has 9 walks and 12 strikeouts. He has also stolen 7 bases in 8 attempts.
Logan Forsythe (A, Atlanta Braves)
Forsythe, who was selected by the Braves in the 13th round last month, has yet to make his professional debut. But we can’t wait to see him in action!
