I Could Play Anywhere: Cards’ Wetherholt Confident in Versatility for MLB

JJ Wetherholt, the No. 6 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, has been making waves with his impressive offense since being promoted to Triple-A by the St. Louis Cardinals on July 7. With a batting average of .295 over 25 games and nine home runs as a Memphis Redbird, there’s no doubt about his hitting abilities.

However, when it comes to his defensive play, there are still some uncertainties. Wetherholt has primarily played second base and shortstop for Double-A Springfield earlier this season, but has recently been given the opportunity to play third base for the Triple-A team. This could be a crucial position for him, as the Cardinals’ third baseman Nolan Arenado has been out for the past two weeks due to a shoulder injury.

But Wetherholt is not worried about his position in the majors. In an interview with MLB.com’s John Denton, he stated that he is still a work in progress on the defensive end and is getting more comfortable with each game. He also mentioned that he has the necessary skills to play any position on the field and is confident in his abilities.

Despite being more experienced at second base and shortstop, Wetherholt is not concerned about where he will end up playing in the majors. He believes that he has the ability to learn and excel at any position, making him a valuable asset to the Cardinals.
