The Savannah Bananas: From Sideshow to Baseball’s Globetrotters
The Savannah Bananas have transformed from a mere sideshow to becoming the baseball equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters. Their latest stop was at Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Even though he spends more time on TV than on the field, three-time All-Star Adam Wainwright joined the list of Major League Baseball players who have made cameo appearances during games. This list includes legendary players like Johnny Bench.
During the game, Wainwright made a surprise appearance and showed off his impressive pitching skills. As one of the best pitchers in Cardinals history, he and Yadier Molina have defined baseball in St. Louis throughout their careers. And after Wainwright’s retirement in 2023, he got the chance to pitch one last time at Busch Stadium.
In an interview with FOX 2 Now’s Joey Schneider, Wainwright shared his experience playing for the Bananas. He described it as a unique and exciting opportunity to put on a show for Cardinals fans.
“Yeah, it was awesome,” Wainwright said about the game. “When the crowd gets into it, you can’t help but feel it. The rhythm was pumping, and it was great to be back on the field at Busch Stadium. It’s my favorite place to pitch in the whole world, and I had the chance to pitch in front of these amazing fans. St. Louis is the best baseball town in the world, and I was blessed to play here for 18 years. Being back at Busch Stadium just felt right.”
Although Wainwright’s Major League Baseball career has come to an end, he is still beloved by St. Louis fans. Along with Molina, who also retired from playing, they both remain involved in the Cardinals organization as special advisors to the team and its players. As the trade deadline approaches, their valuable perspectives could play a crucial role in the team’s decision-making process.
Wainwright, Bench, and other MLB legends who have played with the Bananas all share a similar reaction. While they may not be playing at the highest level, the team from Savannah is having more fun on the diamond than anyone else.
